The IQ-Adaptive Functioning Gap in Individuals with Autism without Comorbid Intellectual Disability

​Impairments in adaptive functioning among children with ASD without comorbid intellectual disability are well-established. Findings from Dr. Matthew's research at SARRC suggest that this gap between intellectual and adaptive functioning continues into adulthood and widens with age, which likely contributes to suboptimal adult outcomes for this demographic. This presentation will review the construct of adaptive functioning and how it is measured, present findings from original SARRC research that examined adaptive functioning profiles among intellectually-able transition-aged youth with ASD, and open a discusion about implications and behavioral strategies to address adaptive functioning impairments in this often underserved demographic.
