Understanding Aging in Autistic Adults and Developing Meaningful Support Programs Hosted by the AzABA ABA for Adults Committee
Location: Zoom (Login will be emailed prior to the presentation)
Presenters: Dr. Blair Braden
Summary: Dr. Blair Braden's lab is among the first to study age-related cognitive and brain changes in older autistic adults, with a focus on sex differences. The importance of this work is underscored by accumulating evidence that autistic adults are more likely to develop age-related neurodegenerative conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. She will discuss early signs of cognitive vulnerabilities, age-related brain changes, and genetic contributors to aging outcomes from her unique longitudinal study in middle-age and older autistic adults compared to matched, non-autistic controls. Additionally, Dr. Braden and her collaborative research group translate cognitive and brain findings into meaningful support programs for autistic adults across the lifespan. Findings from studies including mindfulness techniques, social strategies adapted from the UCLA PEERS® program, and executive function compensation approaches will be discussed.
