Summary:
In recent years, applied behavior analytic researchers have developed frameworks for conceptualizing and teaching compassionate care to practitioners (D’Agostino et al., 2023; Denegri et al., 2023; Hustyi & Hays, 2024; LeBlanc et al., 2020; Nohelty et al., 2024; Rohrer et al., 2021; Rohrer & Weiss; 2022; Scallan & Rosales-Ruiz, 2023; Taylor et al., 2019; Verojporn & Luna, 2024. Some are discussing compassion as the eighth dimension of ABA (Penny et al., 2023; Rodriguez et al., 2023), an addition to the seminal seven dimensions identified by Baer et al. in 1968. Despite these advancements, important aspects of therapeutic alliance, such as caringly interrupting when a person is rambling or challenging an individual to observe how they move their body when discussing a topic have not been yet addressed within this literature. In this brief workshop, participants will view examples of 15 observable, measurable compassionate care skills organized into four classes. We will take one behavior from each class and operationally define it functionally, in terms of relevant antecedents and consequences. Then, we will evaluate the performance of a person modeling each of these four behaviors and practice the behavior in dyads.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify at least one recent article that addresses compassionate care in ABA practice.

  2. Evaluate at least two compassionate care skills in terms of the variables of which they are a function.

  3. Discriminate effective and ineffective application of four compassionate care skills.

  4. Practice application of at least two compassionate care skills
