Summary:
Diving into the realm of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) within the BACB’s subspecialties uncovers a treasure trove of insights, notably a compelling handout that introduces a crucial perspective on substance use and misuse. It posits, based on decades of both laboratory and clinical research, that these behaviors are operant in nature, influenced significantly by their consequences. It highlights how behavioral strategies are not only capable of preventing and addressing misuse of substances—ranging from alcohol and stimulants to opioids and nicotine—but also the psychosocial challenges intertwined with them. Among the pioneering interventions birthed from this understanding stands the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA), lauded as a cornerstone methodology for both adolescents and adults grappling with substance use disorders.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify basic tenants of the Community Reinforcement Approach and supporting research.
  2. Recall key steps of protocols of CRA: Initial Session, Happiness Scale, Functional Analyses (SUD and Pro-Social), Problem Solving and Communication Skills.
  3. Demonstrate core protocols of CRA: Initial Session, Happiness Scale, Functional Analyses (SUD and Pro-Social), Problem Solving and Communication Skills.
