Description: In this presentation, Drs. David Wacker (on-site), Matt O’Brien (at the University of Iowa presenting via telehealth) and Kelly Schieltz (at the University of Iowa presenting via telehealth) will provide a description of how behavioral assessment and treatment can be conducted via telehealth directly in the homes of young children with autism. The presentation will begin with a description of how NIH funded projects were conducted over 20 years to first develop an effective behavioral assessment (based on functional analysis) and treatment (based on functional communication training) and later to conduct the procedures as efficiently as possible using telehealth. During the presentation, Dr. Wacker will define and provide examples of functional analysis and functional communication training procedures. The definitions and examples will be appropriate for both professionals with extensive experience in conducting the procedures as well as for parents and individuals who are new to the field. He will provide a rational for the use of these procedures as well as case examples conducted in vivo in parent’s homes. An overall summary of the results will be provided coupled with extensive references. Drs. O’Brien and Kelly will then provide examples of how the procedures were conducted in the homes showing videos of parents conducting the procedures with coaching from trained applied behavior analysts. A question and answer period will follow permitting audience members to further clarify the procedures.
